Russell Solomon opened the first Tower Records store on Broadway in Sacramento in 1960. He named it after his father’s drugstore, which shared a building with the Tower Theatre.
The chain grew internationally, opened Tower.com in 1995, and closed its stores in 2006 when it filed for bankruptcy. It returned as an online retailer in November 2020.
