Midtown

Midtown is Sacramento’s walkable, tree-lined core: old Victorians turned into restaurants, murals on the walls, Sutter’s Fort at its eastern end and an art walk every second Saturday.

Discover Midtown

Midtown is the part of Sacramento’s original street grid east of 16th Street. It is largely residential, with tree-lined streets and old Victorians, and it is known for being easy to walk and bike. (Wikipedia)

On the second Saturday of every month, Midtown hosts an art walk that brings out thousands of people. Lavender Heights, around K and 20th Streets, is the city’s gay and lesbian district. (Wikipedia)

At 27th and L Streets stands Sutter’s Fort, begun by John Sutter in 1839 as the center of his colony of New Helvetia. Its two-story adobe main building, put up between 1841 and 1843, is the only original structure left. On January 28, 1848, James Marshall showed Sutter the gold from Coloma inside it. (Wikipedia)

The Sacramento grid itself was laid out in December 1848 by John Sutter Jr. and Sam Brannan. (Wikipedia)
