The Grid

Sacramento’s original street plan of lettered and numbered streets, laid out in 1848.

In December 1848 John Sutter Jr. and Samuel Brannan had Army Captain William H. Warner draft the layout of the city. It had 26 lettered and 31 numbered streets.

The grid extends from C Street to Broadway and from Front Street to Alhambra Boulevard. Historic districts such as Poverty Ridge lie within the original 1848 grid.
