The Sacramento River

California’s largest river, 400 miles from the Klamath Mountains to the Delta; it gave the city its name.

The Sacramento River flows south about 400 miles from the Klamath Mountains to the Delta and San Francisco Bay. It drains about 26,500 square miles in 19 counties, and once supported one of the southernmost large runs of Chinook salmon in North America.

The Spanish explorer Gabriel Moraga named it in 1808, and the name was later shortened to Sacramento. The American River joins it in downtown Sacramento.
