The Railyards

The 244-acre former Southern Pacific shops site at the western end of the first transcontinental railroad, now being redeveloped as a downtown neighborhood.

The Sacramento Railyards is an urban infill area of about 244 acres at the western terminus of the first transcontinental railroad. The Central Pacific merged with the Southern Pacific in 1870 and its maintenance yards were expanded with the Southern Pacific shops.

Union Pacific, which took over Southern Pacific in 1996, ended rail operations in the yards in 1999. The redevelopment plan preserves the Central Shops buildings and the Sacramento Valley Station and has included proposals for housing, offices, parks and a 25,000-seat stadium for Sacramento Republic FC.
