Camellia City

A nickname Sacramento shares with several other American cities; the Capitol’s grounds hold a Pioneer Camellia Grove planted in 1942.

Sacramento is one of several American cities nicknamed the Camellia City of its state. The flower shows up in local institutions too: one of the city’s orchestras is the Camellia Symphony.

In Capitol Park, the Pioneer Camellia Grove was created in 1942 by the Native Sons and Daughters of the Golden West as a tribute to the pioneers of the city and county of Sacramento.
